In the Margins ("the app") is a personal reading tracker developed by miroda. This policy explains what data the app accesses and how it's used.
All of your library data — books, ratings, notes, quotes, reading logs, and settings — is stored locally on your device using a local database. It is not uploaded to any server operated by us, and we do not have access to it.
The app lets you export your library to a backup file on your own device, and import it back later. This file is created and controlled entirely by you; we never receive a copy of it.
When you scan or search for a book by ISBN or title, the app sends that lookup (the ISBN or search text) to third-party book metadata providers — Open Library and/or the Google Books API — in order to retrieve the book's title, author, cover image, and page count. These providers may log requests according to their own privacy policies:
If you add your own Google Books API key in Settings, that key is stored locally on your device and used only to authenticate your own lookup requests. It is never included in exported backup files.
The app requests camera access solely to scan book barcodes (ISBNs) using on-device barcode recognition. No images or video are stored, transmitted, or retained — the camera feed is processed in real time and discarded.
If you enable daily reading reminders, these are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device. No reminder data is sent anywhere.
